KEPALA BATAS: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said now is the time for Umno to help its partners in Barisan Nasional, for the support it received when the party was faced with a crisis about 30 years ago.
Pointing to the time when Umno was banned in 1988, the Umno vice president reminded party members that it was BN component parties that came to the party's aid. "Life is a cycle.
There are times when you are up and there are times you are down. It is now time for Umno to help our friends. "In Penang's case, we will help Penang BN to recapture the state from the current administration," he said when officiating Umno Kepala Batas division delegates meeting this afternoon. Present were state BN chief Teng Chang Yeow, Umno Kepala Batas division chief Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Medican and former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Zahid said both he and Teng agreed that there was a need to bring BN back to power in Penang. "Please listen carefully. I am your brother and I am here to help you. "I have no hidden agenda," he said. Zahid added that the beauty of BN lies in its willingness to share power. "Umno is not here to grab all the seats. We believe in power sharing. "And we have never discriminate other races," he added.
Earlier, Teng had blamed Umno for the coalition’s failure to recapture Penang in the last general election, after Zahid made a remark that Gerakan and MCA should follow Umno’s footsteps. He said BN lost Penang not because of weak election machinery or lack of unity, but because of Umno.
